Topic-icon Local authority approached you about waste reuse?

14 years 1 month ago #541 by csr@childrensscrapstore.co.uk
I'm keen to see if any of you have already experienced this. We have been approached by Bristol City Council by their waste recycling officer. He wants to talk to us about aspects of the government's waste strategy review.

He has emailed us saying he suspects that at some point this year, "local government will be tasked with looking at commercial waste opportunities". He's interested to see how the local authority and the Scrapstore could work together on the reuse angle.

We haven't had the meeting yet so have no idea what exactly this will entail but wondered if (because this appears to be a national issue) any other scrapstores have been approached like this already.

Keen to hear your feedback.
Cheers,
Charlie

Hi

We have had various enquiries in the past from individual parts of the local authority, from a Waste Reduction perspective looking to do various things but nothing that has resulted in anything sustantial. What we are looking for locally is someone in the LA with a bit of clout that will approach is with something that actually has a bit of meat on the bones!

I think you are correct in that the local authorities will be looking for commercial waste opportunities if pressure is plaed on them from government, but until that happens I can't see our local authority being that proactive.

Cheers
Jonathan

It is the 1992 Controlled Waste Regulations that are under review; new charges for Local Authorities won't happen till after April this year according to Defra's website. Basically it is hoped more re-use will be the result of the changes.

Hi
We haven't been approached by our council but we are talking to our local waste disposal company who are Violia, to try and get the scrap before it goes to landfill

Attached is the government's action plan and WRAP's business plan both of which might prove useful in knowing what and how they plan to work.
