Understanding the distinction between them is essential for protecting your mental health and ensuring long-term well-being. 
Compassion fatigue, sometimes called “secondary traumatic stress,” happens when you absorb the suffering of those you care for. It’s the emotional residue of constantly being exposed to others’ trauma. Burnout is a broader response to prolonged workplace stress. While it can affect anyone, helping professionals are particularly susceptible.
