How can I tell if waterproofing is failing?

If waterproofing has already been done, how do you know when it’s no longer effective? I’m worried about relying on something that might degrade over time. There aren’t always obvious signs until damage appears. I’d like to catch problems early if possible. It’s difficult to monitor something you can’t fully see. What should I look out for?
