Topic-icon Craft sessions at Scrapstores

13 years 4 months ago #862 by ScrapMagicAll
Hi there
I have noticed in the various Facebook posts from scrapstores I get that quite a few scrapstores offer craft classes/sessions on a weekly or monthly basis making crafts using the materials they have in store.
I am just wondering how those scrapstores fund this activity so they can provide it?
Is it in core funding, do participants pay a fee etc...?
Some scrapstores seem to get artists in to run the sessions, how are they paid for?
This is something we would potentially want to set up next year if our commissioners write into our agreement a monthly Saturday morning opening but they wouldn’t fund the extra work or staff for a craft session as well.
Any advice or tips please share :)
Thanks
Claire

Hello again, we have been lucky and had offers from a lady who is involved with the town's Environmental City charity. She will done workshops for us as long as they tiein with the Eco schools agenda. Maybe if yourcounci is running the One planet appoarch to recycling they may be able to offer something similar.

Hi Claire
We deliver craft sessions, we do 2 3hour workshops spring and winter we normally get between 40-60 people at each session and it's funded by our County Coucillor.(£500 each session )

We also deliver sessions for the childrens centre they are 1hour sessions and we charge £100 + materials a session which is not much but they book in blokes of 6 sessions.

We have just got some funding to open our membership up to families and we included some drop in workshops in that bid, so we are redesigning our kitchen/sorting area to make enough room for 6-8 people. We will just put the materials on the table with worksheets and let them have a go, I will be available to help if need be.

We also got funding from the Co-op for a new photocopier and foldable tables and chairs so we can make the area as big or as small as we need.

I have put a bid into Veolia who are recycing people they have a local fund where you can apply for upto £1000 we applied for money to promote play/crafts through recycling (6 sessions) which we will deliver at organised events ie. playdays, etc.

We do Chinese New Year for our Borough Council, which as turned into a big event it started about 5 years ago with about 30 people and last year their was over 300. The Borough council only pay £250 which we will try a negociate this year, as we needed 12 volunteers to cope with so many people in a 2 hour session.

There is also some money available though our County Council Arts grant which we have not tapped into yet but but it may be worth you having a look at in your areas.

Lastly we work with some of the schools how run art clubs and we charge them £100 1.5hrs for 6-8 children, they are normally children with special needs, but the teachers come with them.

I hope this is of use, give me a call if you need any other info.

Good luck
Linda

Thanks for the updates Ladies
I don’t think there’s anything like the project in Middleborough, if there was it would probably be our organisation commissioned to do it!
Thanks for all the info Linda, we are already well funded to provide outreach play sessions using scrap materials and also have schools etc... who pay for us to come to them too.
I was thinking of sessions where artists come in and run very specific craft sessions (we are playworkers so have that approach in our play sessions) to make something to take home, either for adults or children or both. If we were to do this we would need someone to come in and run the session. I think Ulverston do this on Saturdays and wondered how that type of thing was funded?
Thanks Claire

Have you approached any of the Art colleges/universities in your area? Their students mught do a session or two for the experience, once CRB checked. It could then go in their portfolio of experience/ part of their CV. ALSO EARLY YEARS STUDENTS WHO WANT TO BECOME CHILDMINDERS.
