Topic-icon NATIONAL DISTRIBUTION CENTRE IN BIRMINGHAM?!

13 years 5 months ago - 13 years 5 months ago #816 by scrapleeds
I understand that Bristol Scrapstore are looking into securing lottery funding for a national distrubution centre in Birmingham. Is this going ahead and what does it entail. Surely as part of the national network of scrapstores we should all be consulted about this.
As it is a National distrubution centre will it affect other scrapstores nationally. What will the impact be to other scrapstores and what are the benefits if any to us all?

This would be a good topic to bring up at the conference as it sounds like a major plan which could possibly affect us all.

I do not know all the details and maybe it isnt a National Distrubution centre at all but it must affect others in some way. I would like to hear peoples views.

Thanks
Louise Lucas

Hi Louise

This is a very good suggestion and you are not the first person to request such a discussion. We have an open Q&A session at the conference and this would be correct forum for this.

We will ensure that this is placed on the agenda for that session.

Kind Regards
Jonathan

The Lottery, Bristol Scrapstore and ScrapstoresUK met yesterday to discuss the concerns expressed by members to ScrapstoresUK with regards to Children's Scrapstore Bristol's proposed creation of a centre in Birmingham's Kings Norton.
The Lottery have been generous in removing the time barrier so as to allow Children's Scrapstore Bristol to fully consult and if appropriate amend their bid if they feel they need to.
The Lottery's aim is to ensure best value for their investment, they want to see that the most amount of people will benefit from any proposal. The plans made by Childrens Scrapstore Bristol are unprecedentedly ambitious in scale however they have said that they only intend to work within the "Birmingham box" (that's the ring road to non-Midlands folk). ScrapstoresUK will be meeting with them to discuss how we can support the robust consultation process the Lottery requires.
We would urge anyone with any questions to direct these to Jeff Hill at Children's Scrapstore Bristol to give them the opportunity to address them personally, you can send a copy to me: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or to our new offices: SCRAPSTORESUK, U3 South Fens Business Centre, Fenton Way, Chatteris, Cambridgeshire. PE16 6TT.
A further update on the consultation process will follow the meeting with Childrens Scrapstore Bristol and ScrapstoresUK due to take place within the next week or so.
kind regards
Nikki

Hallo, I feel I must be clear about the intentions relating to this as it would be helpful. We have not put forward plans for a National Distribution Centre in Birmingham. That title is not ours. We intend to provide a National resource for scrap for our PlayPods scrapstores to use. We recognise that in that process there is likely to be additional scrap (which is likel only if we are successful) and so will be happy for any scrapstore to come and take whatever we have in the normal way. We do not wish to become a Nationally representative scrapstore but hope that we can be helpful as we go along. We will provide more information but as Nikki says we have yet to design the best way forward for the consultation process which we will be doing with the help of Scrapstores UK. Please can I ask you not to forward questions to me at this time as we will be unprepared for any answers not yet having made any decisions about that process and I would not like anyone to be frustrated by our not being able to answer them yet. Please hang on to them, we will get to you. Jeff (Bristol Children's Scrapstore)

Hello Jeff,

I appreciate you are still to work on your plans and proposal. However, I believe I have a reasonable question that, whilst unrelated to the bid/discussions/consultation, is important and requires your clarification for everyone's understanding...

Within Nikki's post there is the geographical reference to "...only intend to work within the "Birmingham box" (that's the ring road to non-Midlands folk)."

Admittedly, I'm guessing that "Birmingham box" was a phrase used by you/Bristol representative within yesterday's meeting. However, as a Midlander I don't understand the geographical area that extends to. City ring road? M5,M6,M42 boundary? Other? ....Please clarify.

Thank you.

Hi, this is exactly why we cannot conduct consultation via public arena. Nikki's reference is in itself inaccurate and so any answer would probably lead to more mis-information. Please wait as all will become clear. Thank you, Jeff.
